Carbon and its Compounds 3 marks Medium
Name two oxidising agents that are used for the conversion of alcohols to acids. Distinguish between ethanol and ethanoic acid on the basis of
  1. (i)litmus test, and
  2. (ii)reaction with sodium hydrogen carbonate.

Answer

Alkaline and acidified are oxidising agents; only ethanoic acid turns blue litmus red and gives effervescence with sodium hydrogencarbonate.

Oxidising agents: alkaline potassium permanganate () and acidified potassium dichromate (), used with heating. (i) Litmus test: ethanoic acid turns blue litmus red, as it is acidic; ethanol does not change the colour of litmus, as it is neutral. (ii) Reaction with sodium hydrogencarbonate: ethanoic acid reacts with brisk effervescence, giving off carbon dioxide, which turns lime water milky (); ethanol does not react, so there is no effervescence.
