Chemical Reactions and Equations 3 marks Medium
“Respiration is an exothermic process.” Justify this statement giving the chemical equation for the reaction involved. How is respiration different from breathing ?

Answer

Respiration releases energy from glucose, , so it is exothermic; breathing is only a physical exchange of gases.

During respiration, glucose obtained from food combines with oxygen in the cells and is oxidised to carbon dioxide and water, and energy is released. Since energy is given out, respiration is an exothermic process: Breathing is a physical process by which an organism takes in oxygen from the surroundings and gives out carbon dioxide, whereas respiration is a biochemical process in the cells in which food is oxidised to release energy.
