Carbon and its Compounds 5 marks Easy
  1. (a)What is a homologous series ? Explain with an example.
  2. (b)Define the following terms giving one example of each. (i) Esterification (ii) Addition reaction

Answer

Homologous series members share a functional group and differ by ; esterification gives an ester; addition adds atoms across a multiple bond.

(a) A homologous series is a series of carbon compounds that have the same functional group (and hence similar chemical properties) and the same general formula, in which successive members differ by a unit (14 u in molecular mass); their physical properties change gradually along the series. Example: the alcohols (methanol), (ethanol), (propanol) and (butanol) all have the functional group and the general formula , and each differs from the next by . (b) (i) Esterification: the reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst (concentrated sulphuric acid) to form a sweet-smelling ester and water. Example: (ethyl ethanoate and water). (ii) Addition reaction: a reaction in which atoms, such as hydrogen, add across a double or triple bond of an unsaturated compound, in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel or palladium. Example: (unsaturated ethene gives saturated ethane).
