CBSE Class 10 Science 2022 · Paper 31(B)/5 · Question 3(a)
What is Pistil (Carpel) ? State the main function of any two of its parts.
Answer
The pistil is the female part of a flower; the stigma receives pollen, and the ovary holds the ovules and later becomes the fruit.
The pistil (carpel) is the female reproductive part of a flower, present at its centre. It has three parts: the stigma, the style and the ovary.
Main functions (any two):
1. Stigma: the terminal part, which may be sticky, receives the pollen grains during pollination.
2. Style: the elongated middle part through which the pollen tube grows down to reach the ovary, carrying the male germ-cell.
3. Ovary: the swollen bottom part contains the ovules, each with an egg cell (female gamete); fertilisation takes place in the ovule, and after fertilisation the ovary develops into the fruit.
