Periodic Classification of Elements 3 marks Medium
In the ‘Modern Periodic Table’, a zigzag line separates metals from non-metals. Name any two borderline elements. What will be the atomic size of the elements on the right hand side of this as compared to the elements of the same period present on this line and why ?

Answer

Silicon and germanium are borderline elements; elements to the right of the zigzag line are smaller because nuclear charge rises across a period.

Borderline elements: any two of boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, tellurium and polonium, for example silicon and germanium. The elements on the right-hand side of the zigzag line are smaller in atomic size than the borderline elements of the same period (in period 3: P pm, S pm and Cl pm, against Si pm). Reason: across a period the nuclear charge increases by one unit at each step while the electrons are added to the same outermost shell, so the nucleus pulls the electrons closer and the atomic size decreases.
