CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/5/1 · Question 6
Define genetics. Why is decrease in the number of surviving tigers a cause of concern from the point of view of genetics ? Explain briefly.
Answer
Genetics studies heredity and variation; fewer tigers mean inbreeding and less variation, so a change in the environment could make the species extinct.
Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with the study of heredity and variation.
When the number of surviving tigers decreases, the few that remain have to breed among themselves (inbreeding), so little variation appears among their offspring. Variation is what allows some individuals of a species to survive when the environment changes; with little variation, a change in the environment (for example a new disease) may leave no tiger able to cope, and the species may become extinct.
