CBSE Class 10 Science 2020 · Paper 31/4/1 · Question 21
A concave mirror is used for image formation for different positions of an object. What inferences can be drawn about the following when an object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from the pole of a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm ?
- (a)Position of the image
- (b)Size of the image
- (c)Nature of the image Draw a labelled ray diagram to justify your inferences.
Answer
The image is 30 cm behind the mirror, magnified three times, virtual and erect.
(a) Position: the image is formed behind the mirror, cm from the pole ( cm).
(b) Size: the image is magnified, three times the size of the object ().
(c) Nature: the image is virtual and erect.
Ray diagram: a ray from the top of the object parallel to the principal axis is reflected through F, and a ray along the line from C is reflected back along itself. The reflected rays diverge, and their backward extensions meet behind the mirror, giving a virtual, erect and enlarged image, as in the figure.
