CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/3/1 · Question 4(a)
How do auxins promote the growth of a tendril around a support ?
Answer
Auxin collects on the side of the tendril away from the support, so that side grows faster and the tendril coils round the support.
When a tendril comes in contact with a support, auxin (a plant hormone made at the growing tip) diffuses towards the side of the tendril away from the point of contact. Auxin makes the cells on that side grow longer, so the part of the tendril away from the support grows faster, while the part in contact with the support does not grow as rapidly. Because the two sides grow unequally, the tendril bends towards the support and coils round it, and so the plant clings to the support.
