CBSE Class 10 Science 2020 · Paper 31/1/3 · Question 18(b)
- (a)What is tropism ?
- (b)How do auxins promote the growth of a tendril around a support?
Answer
Tropism is directional growth movement in response to a stimulus; auxin makes the tendril's far side grow faster, so it coils around the support.
(a) Tropism is the directional movement of a plant part, brought about by growth, in response to a stimulus; the movement is either towards the stimulus or away from it, as when a shoot bends towards light.
(b) When the tip of a tendril touches a support, more auxin diffuses from the tip towards the side of the tendril away from the support. Auxin makes cells grow longer, so that side grows faster than the side in contact with the support, and the tendril bends and coils around the support.
