Electricity 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)Two lamps rated 100 W, 220 V and 10 W, 220 V are connected in parallel to 220 V supply. Calculate the total current through the circuit.
  2. (b)Two resistors X and Y of resistances and respectively are first joined in parallel and then in series. In each case the voltage supplied is 5 V. (i) Draw circuit diagrams to show the combination of resistors in each case. (ii) Calculate the voltage across the resistor in the series combination of resistors.

Answer

The two lamps draw A in total; in series the resistor has V across it.

(a) Each lamp gets the full 220 V, so A and A; the total current is A A. (b) (i) In parallel, X () and Y () are connected between the same two junctions, which are joined through a plug key to the 5 V battery; in series, X and Y are joined end to end in a single loop with the plug key and the 5 V battery (circuit diagrams in the figure). (ii) In series, , so A, and the voltage across the resistor is V.
