Case Study - 2: While playing in a garden, Samaira saw a honeycomb and asked her mother what it is. Her mother replied that it is a honeycomb made by honey bees to store honey. Also, she told her that the shape of the honeycomb formed is a mathematical structure. The mathematical representation of the honeycomb is shown in the graph (an upward parabola crossing the -axis at and ). Based on the above information, answer the following questions:
  1. (i)How many zeroes are there for the polynomial represented by the graph given?
  2. (ii)Write the zeroes of the polynomial. (iii)(a) If the zeroes of a polynomial are and , then determine the values of and . OR (iii)(b) If the square of difference of the zeroes of the polynomial is , then find the value of .
(-7,0) (7,0) 50 -50 x y
Upward parabola with x-intercepts (-7,0) and (7,0).

Answer

(i) 2 zeroes; (ii) -7 and 7; (iii)(a) a=0, b=-6; (iii)(b) p = +/-18.
