CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/2/3 · Question 5(a)
List two chemical properties on the basis of which ethanol and ethanoic acid may be differentiated and explain how.
Answer
Ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydroxide (and turns blue litmus red) and gives effervescence with sodium hydrogencarbonate; ethanol does neither.
(i) Reaction with a base (acidic nature): ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to give sodium ethanoate and water, , and it turns blue litmus red; ethanol does not react with sodium hydroxide and has no effect on litmus.
(ii) Reaction with sodium hydrogencarbonate (or sodium carbonate): ethanoic acid gives brisk effervescence of carbon dioxide, which turns lime water milky, ; ethanol gives no effervescence.
