CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/3/2 · Question 4(a)
What is insulin ? Why are some patients of diabetes treated by giving injections of insulin ?
Answer
Insulin is a pancreatic hormone that lowers blood glucose; it is injected when the pancreas does not make enough.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. It regulates the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood: when the blood sugar level rises, the pancreas releases more insulin, which lowers it.
In some patients of diabetes the pancreas does not secrete enough insulin, so the sugar level in their blood stays high. Injections of insulin supply the missing hormone and reduce the blood glucose level to normal.
