- Q1Give an example of a metal which
- (i)is a liquid at room temperature.
- (ii)can be easily cut with a knife.
- (iii)is the best conductor of heat.
- (iv)is a poor conductor of heat.
Step-by-step solution →Show answer
Mercury is a liquid at room temperature, sodium can be cut with a knife, silver conducts heat best and lead conducts it poorly.
(i) Mercury (Hg) is a liquid at room temperature; (ii) Sodium (Na), or any other alkali metal such as potassium or lithium, can be easily cut with a knife; (iii) Silver (Ag) is the best conductor of heat; (iv) Lead (Pb), or mercury, is a poor conductor of heat. - Q2Explain the meanings of malleable and ductile.Step-by-step solution →

Malleable means can be beaten into thin sheets; ductile means can be drawn into thin wires.
Malleable: a metal is malleable when it can be beaten (hammered) into thin sheets without breaking; gold and silver are the most malleable metals. Ductile: a metal is ductile when it can be drawn into thin wires; gold is the most ductile metal, and about 2 km of wire can be drawn from one gram of gold. Because of these two properties, metals can be given different shapes according to our needs.
